Common Types of Cargo in Air Freight

2024-09-14

As a fast and efficient international logistics method, air freight has a variety of common cargo types to meet the needs of different industries and fields.

General cargo

General cargo refers to cargo that has no special requirements for transportation, loading and unloading, and storage. This type of cargo occupies a large proportion in air transport, including but not limited to daily consumer goods, industrial products, electronic products, mechanical equipment and its accessories, etc. General cargo usually does not involve special requirements such as dangerous goods, refrigeration or freshness, so the transportation process is relatively simple.

Dangerous goods

Dangerous goods refer to goods with dangerous characteristics such as explosion, flammability, corrosion, toxicity, radioactivity, etc., and have special requirements in transportation, storage, and packaging. There are many types of dangerous goods in air transport, such as lithium batteries, chemicals, magnetic materials, flammable liquids, etc. This type of cargo needs to be strictly identified and classified before transportation, and packaged, marked and labeled in accordance with the relevant regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to ensure transportation safety.

Refrigerated fresh goods

Refrigerated fresh goods refer to goods that require special measures (such as refrigeration, insulation, etc.) during transportation to ensure the quality and freshness of the goods. Such goods usually include fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, flowers, etc. During air transportation, refrigerated fresh goods need to be packaged with special refrigeration equipment or insulation materials to ensure that the goods meet the required temperature requirements during transportation. At the same time, it is also necessary to pay attention to the shelf life and transportation time of the goods to avoid deterioration or damage of the goods.

Chemicals and pharmaceuticals

Chemicals and pharmaceuticals also require special attention in air transportation. Such goods usually have specific chemical properties or pharmacological effects, and have high requirements for packaging and transportation conditions. Before transportation, it is necessary to understand the nature, form (such as liquid, granules, powder, colloid, etc.) and packaging requirements of the goods, and provide an air transportation hazard identification report (DGM identification) according to the transportation requirements of the airline. For dangerous chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it is also necessary to package, mark and label them in accordance with relevant regulations.

Other special cargo

In addition to the common cargo types mentioned above, air transport also involves some other special cargo, such as oversized cargo, valuables, artworks, cultural relics, etc. These goods require special attention to protection and safety measures during transportation to ensure that the goods can arrive at the destination intact.
